QUESTIONS on the EDGE of CHAOS

by Joanna Poppink

Friend: Is your work representational or abstract?
  Artist: (Silence)
Friend: (Awkward)
  Artist: (Struggles)
Friend: What I mean is, are your paintings pictures of real things?
Artist: Some look like what people call abstract. Some look like what people call real things. To me, I'm attempting to paint what the world really looks like.
Friend: (Awkward, struggles) What?
Artist: Look closely at small portions of large things and imagine them framed as paintings. Like the bark of a tree or the pattern in a man's beard, the grain of a stone or the texture of your own skin. You will begin to see that abstract paintings can be what the world really looks like.
Friend: (Looking around) Oh. I see.
  Artist: Yes.
