LOW-FEE ALTERNATIVES TO DIVORCE MEDIATIONPlease remember, this column is designed to help the consumer seeking behavioral-health information, and not intended to be any form of psychotherapy or a replacement for professional, individualized services. QuestionWe are on a limited income and probably cannot afford divorce mediation. What options are available for us? AnswerYou can work towards an agreement on your own, take it to court, or hire a mediator. Most states have policies which allow the courts to refer you to a mediator who will see you for a low fee or on a sliding scale based on income. In many cases the initial consultation is free. These mediators are usually required to have a substantial amount of training, and often they are the same people who charge higher fees in the community. If your divorce is currently before a judge, tell him or her that you are interested in mediation and ask about a referral. If you are not involved with the court right now, then call the court and ask if they can refer you to a mediator who will work with you at a reduced fee. A limited income should not be a barrier in most parts of the United States. 12/30/98
